"Space4Cities: integrating Galileo and Copernicus downstream applications to support dynamic use of Public spaces" with the acronym "Space4Cities" is a European Project of the Horizon Europe Programme in which the Regional Development Fund of Attica participates as a partner, seeking the development of innovative technological solutions and practices in the fields of mobility, public space management, safety and security of residents and the mitigation of the effects of climate change within the urban fabric by using data from European satellites, through the innovative Pre Commercial Procurement (PCP) process.
Objectives
The central objective of the project is to make European cities more resilient and sustainable, by developing applications and services based on space technologies and data from European satellites (Galileo & Copernicus), combined with the use of data from third-party sources, through a joint Pre-Commercial Procurement to dynamically address challenges in the urban fabric, in the following key areas:
- Urban Planning and Management: using digital tools to improve the accuracy and efficiency of urban data collection, analysis and visualisation.
- Sustainable Mobility: Improving public transport, active mobility (such as walking and cycling), logistics and emergency response, while reducing CO2 emissions.
- Climate adaptation: Strengthening the resilience of cities to environmental risks such as floods and heat waves, promoting green spaces and supporting the transition to cleaner energy sources.
The SPACE4Cities project has a total budget of €5.2 million, of which €2.87 million is earmarked for companies. The project will support the development of new solutions through a Pre-Commercial Procurement (PCP) process involving three phases: conceptualisation, prototype development and pilot implementation. From 2026 to 2027, the first 5 innovative solutions that qualify in the final phase of the process will be tested in the project partner cities of Helsinki, Amsterdam, the Attica Region, Ghent and Guimarães, as well as in 10 other European cities - wider urban areas - selected during the process.
